In a huge space (at least for the area) on Brighton Ave. in Allston, Shabu-Zen serves an expansive selection of hot pots with a multitude of broths, proteins, and vegetables to pick from. Sit at a booth, a table, the bar, or even a private room. Mainly options above cheap but possible to eat on a budget. The complimentary pork broth is mild in flavor, reminiscent of a wonton soup broth. Added option ($) to enhance the taste, including Szechuan and Japanese Miso. The broth is boiled in a large metal bowl. Use the strainer spoon to stir and add in your proteins and vegetables after the broth boils.
Place vegetables - tomato, tofu, mushroom, corn, carrot, bok choy, and greens - into the boiling broth. Cook times vary, corn and carrot will be the longest.
Spoon in protein(s) of choice and cook accordingly. The seafood supreme (scallop, prawn, salmon, cod, squid, clam, and fish cake) or the meat combo (choice of two - beef, chicken, pork, or lamb) are good choices to get varied tastes. Serve into the small bowl and enjoy with a delicate soy sauce with the option of adding shrimp paste, garlic, and scallion.
