Pikliz International Kitchen

Been searching awhile for Caribbean-style whole fish. Found it. Pikliz International Kitchen is a delight. On Broadway in East Somerville, come to this nook for take-out. Also a few stools to eat-in. Most of the dishes are available at the counter, ready-to-go.

Jerked chicken on the bone, oxtail and stewed chicken to name a few. Pick your protein with rice and beans, plantains, baked macaroni and cheese, or vegetables like sliced cabbage. Jerked chicken is incredibly tender and the spice is there but not overpowering - a slow burn. Rice and beans are plentiful with a "hearthy" spice (maybe a little cinnamon and nutmeg?). The macaroni and cheese casserole comes with bigger ziti noodles. Not too cheesy or creamy also with a little spice, just right.

Also order the stewed red snapper with stewed onions. Be prepared to wait but go for a walk or something. The sauce is incredible - a creole-style sauce with notes of pepper and maybe a little mustard and some butter. Good amount of heat. The fish is served on the bone but it is easy to get to the meat. The plantains are great to dip in this sauce.

Lots of flavor here. Try something new!
