Coreanos

Part two of the tour of new Korean taco joints in Allston. Also on Brighton Avenue taking over the former WAN'S sandwich shop (hope to see some form of this place back, miss it), Coreanos transformed the space into, yes, a Korean/Mexican fusion casual restaurant. While this reviewer is skeptical of fast-moving food trends, this place knows flavor and packs it into bites of juicy tacos and large bowls. The display is very meticulous. Try three tacos for a meal. The tacos come in not-too-thick, not-too-doughy flour tortillas. All of them seem to be garnished with cabbage. The spicy pork also comes with jalapeños. The sweet bulgogi is tender and not greasy. The kalbi (beef short rib) taco is heavy on the meat. Easy to eat without falling apart. The Coreanos bowl is very large and enough for two modest meals. Get pork with mounds of fried rice, sesame, onions, scallions, and even a sunny side egg on top. Served with a creamy and tangy mayo-based sauce. Want something a little more Korean? Coreanos has kimbap. Large sushi-style rolls wrapped in seaweed mixed with assorted vegetables and choice of filling. Note the spicy tuna is not in the style of Japanese sushi. Think tuna salad mixed with a spicy mayo-based sauce. This place also has Korean-style chicken! A few choices of sauces with ranging heat levels. Get wings or boneless (get wings). In comparison with other Korean fried chicken wings, the wings fall in the middle in terms of crispy skin. Meaty and larger than some. Try the yang sum (Korean sweet red chili) sauce for the always satisfying sweet and savory pairing. A mild heat topped with scallions and sesame. And can't forget the standard chopped daikon radish!
