Moldova Restaurant
Charming and creative atmosphere on a busier street in Newton. Accommodating service. Make a reservation. All full/reserved on a Saturday evening and not many tables to begin with.
Must start with the pie. Highlight of the meal with slightly crispy dough. Savory and sweet choices available. A house favorite is the cherry (placinta cu visine). The cow cheese and herb pie (placinta cu brinza si verdeata) is delightful with fresh herbs and almost nutty and creamy cheese, think blend of cream cheese, farmer's cheese, and goat cheese. Enough for two to share as an appetizer. Would even recommend as a stand-alone lunch for one. Why not wash it down with house-made compot (fruit punch)? Don't be afraid, way less sweet than your childhood favorite, with strong notes of cranberry.

Several entrees are slightly above cheap. Sarmale (cabbage and grape leaves) are mild in flavor but certainly not lacking seasoning. Tender and stuffed with rice and chicken. Perfect for dipping in sour cream. Friptura de porc (roasted pork) is also not a flavor explosion, but each element of the dish works as the vinegary pickled cabbage provides that extra punch of flavor to the simple cubed roasted pork. Dip the pork in the sheep cheese or sour cream for the ideal bite. Served with polenta.
